Scaling and Polishing Explained
Scaling and polishing (SAP) is a preventative dental cleaning procedure that helps improve your oral health. The procedure removes surface stains, and stubborn tartar and plaque build-up from below the gum line.
Even with frequent brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can form. This is why scaling and polishing or professional dental cleaning is usually the first line of defence against dental problems like dental decay and gum disease.
Using professional dental instruments, your dentist will remove tartar and plaque build up from your teeth and inside your gums. Once this is done, your dentist will polish your teeth with a polishing paste and a rotating rubber cup. This step removes bacteria and improves the appearance of your teeth.

Scaling and Polishing Cost in Singapore
The average cost of scaling and polishing in Singapore is $55 – $150.
The final cost of scaling and polishing is dependent on your current oral hygiene levels, the length of your SAP procedure and whether you require a second visit for further dental cleaning.
In some cases, the location of your preferred dental clinic can impact the cost of your scaling and polishing treatment. Most neighbourhood and heartland clinics in Singapore are able to charge a lower service fee because of lower rental costs.

Scaling and Polishing Patient Journey
If you visit Frank Dental for scaling and polishing, this is what you can expect.
Step 1
Your dentist will conduct a detailed check-up and assessment of your teeth. X-rays will be taken to ensure that we do not cause further discomfort if your teeth are sensitive. Your scaling and polishing procedure will then be conducted by either a dentist or an oral health therapist.
Step 2
Your dentist will inspect your teeth for dental decay. Plaque and tartar are scraped from the surface of your teeth.
Step 3
A gritty-like paste is placed on a soft rubber cup that looks like an electric toothbrush. The soft rubber cup circles and polishes your teeth, removing surface stains and leaving your teeth smoother and cleaner.
Step 4 (Optional)
In some cases where stubborn stains or discolouration is still present after your scaling and polishing session, your dentist might recommend airflow stain removal or teeth whitening.
Step 5 (Optional)
Once your treatment is completed, a protective coat of fluoride will be applied.
Scaling and Polishing Treatment Duration
The entire scaling and polishing treatment usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
The final duration is largely dependent on how much plaque and tartar build up there is, as well as the oral health and hygiene of the patient.
If you have not visited a dentist for more than 12 months for a professional cleaning and do not have good oral health habits, there is a higher chance that your scaling and polishing session might be longer.

Scaling and Polishing: Patient FAQs
Everything you want to know about scaling and polishing.
You will probably need scaling and polishing if you are currently suffering from the following conditions or are undergoing certain dental or health conditions:
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
- Sensitive teeth
- Swollen gums
- Gums that bleed easily.
Yes, you will have to take X-rays before proceeding with your scaling and polishing procedure.
The X-rays help your dentist check the overall condition of your oral health before your dental cleaning. They also help reveal areas that your dentist might not be able to see with their naked areas. This can help your dentist have a better understanding of where you might feel increased sensitivity.
While we understand that you might be hesitant to take X-rays because of the fear of radiation or the fear of unnecessary dental costs, dental X-rays give you one of the lowest radiation levels of medical imaging.
In fact, if you are a frequent traveller, radiation levels from aeroplane flights for short-haul flights are actually 7-times higher than dental X-rays.
Scaling and polishing is not the same as teeth whitening. While scaling and polishing can help lighten the shade of teeth, it does so by removing dental plaque, tartar and surface stains to retain the natural colour of your teeth. The main purpose of scaling and polishing is to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Teeth whitening, on the other hand, is a cosmetic dental procedure. A bleaching agent is applied onto your teeth to lighten the shade of your teeth.
Scaling and polishing is not the same as brushing or flossing your teeth at home.
Have you ever headed to a 5-star hotel and wondered how they have managed to keep everything spick and span? Scaling and polishing is akin to a 5-star hotel professional cleaning service. The right professional tools are used to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly to remove plaque, calculus and stains.
If you have teeth that are not entirely aligned, scaling and polishing can help reach behind pesky areas.
This does not mean that you should stop brushing and flossing your teeth! While brushing and flossing might not be able to entirely get rid of plaque and tartar, it does help prolong the effectiveness and longevity of your professional dental cleaning.
This is why it is still important to head for professional dental cleaning even when you have a regular and rigorous oral hygiene routine.
Scaling and polishing will not damage your teeth. The procedure only removes accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums without affecting the structure or integrity of your teeth.
However, you should also not overdo scaling and polishing. Always follow the recommendations of your dentist when it comes to the frequency of dental procedures. Overdoing scaling and polishing can result in the wearing down of your enamel.
The scaling and polishing procedure is not meant to be painful. However, just like most other dental procedures, it might cause a bit of discomfort.
One of the most jarring parts of the scaling and polishing experience is the sound of the dental equipment.
Most dentists or dental professionals recommend twice-yearly professional dental cleaning visits.
Plaque formation on your teeth is a continuous process. Plaque that is formed on teeth begins to mineralise into tartar within 10 – 14 hours.
At Frank Dental, we believe that the frequency of your scaling and polishing sessions should be pegged to your individual physical and dental well-being, as well as the dental treatments that you are undergoing.
For instance, if you have recently undergone dental implants treatment, you might wish to consider heading for scaling and polishing every 4 months to maintain the health of your dental implant and promote osseointegration.
